Resilience – Character – Independence – Leadership
Founded in 1988, Troop 897 of Midlothian, VA offers a Scouting experience focused on developing leaders through a comprehensive program built on the foundation of community service.

By allowing our Scouts to take ownership of the program, we build leadership skills that translate to future success. This includes planning our annual schedule, organizing trips and leading our Troop meetings.

While the journey is just as important as the destination, our Scouts often complete the journey to Eagle at a rate exceeding the 5% national average.

We are large enough to offer a comprehensive program and still small enough to ensure a targeted Scouting experience for our youth.

Giving back to the community is a core tenant of the scouting program and our Troop with thousands of hours of community service over the past years.
In addition to summer camp experiences, we also offer our Scouts an opportunity to attend BSA High Adventure camps each year. These camps offer a range of adventures including hiking in New Mexico, sailing the Florida Keys, canoeing the border lakes in Minnesota and rafting in West Virginia.

We enjoy active engagement from our Scouts in The Order of the Arrow, Scoutings National Honor Society. This includes participation in camping events, annual gatherings and supporting various community service initiatives.
The Order of the Arrow was founded in 1915 to serve a useful purpose: to forge lifelong bonds among the leaders in Scouting and recognize those who exemplify the Scout Oath and Law in their daily lives and, through that recognition, cause others to act in the same way. To this day, the Order of the Arrow is dedicated to this high purpose.
We meet weekly at Winfree Church in Midlothian, VA. Trips occur about once per month with care taken to consider known impacts such as exams, holidays and other potential conflicts.
Absolutely! Many of our Scouts are involved in sports, band and other school related activities. Additionally, many attend specialty schools with a demanding course load. We work with Scouts to help them find the right balance.
We work hard to help keep costs down. While high adventure trips can be pricey, Scouts have opportunities to raise money in their individual Scout accounts to help offset costs.
They most certainly can! Many of Scouts joined through friend referrals. It’s never too late to get started and learn new Scouting skills!
Out Troop operates on the foundation of the Scout Oath and Law with a focus on respect, character, independence and leadership. We enjoy an engaged parent community to help reinforce these values and keep our Scouts engaged.
Scouting provides a framework to engage our youth in activities that prepare them for adulthood. In addition to learning new skills through outdoor adventures, Scouting offers a foundation for leadership qualities that show up well in collegiate applications and resumes.
